I thought it would be essential to provide you with an opportunity to research what type of food plan you that sparks your interest. If we are working together one one-on-one, we will discuss your research. Whether you are a coaching client or not, I hope you get value information from your research.
The focus of this lesson is to help you understand what is considered a diet, different types of popular diets according to research, and help you figure out what kind of meal plan for you.
In this lesson, you will cover
- what I consider a diet
- diet versus lifestyle way of eating
- things I have learned most valuable in my nutrition journey
- best diets through research
What is a diet?
I am not too fond of the term diet. The concept of a “diet” to me seems restricted, short-term, and unsustainable. Some people are assigned a diet for medical reasons. However, most people go on a diet to lose weight. Usually, people gain weight again once they stop with their diet. Weight cycling — better known as a yo-yo dieting pattern — has numerous health risks, such as having relationships to the cause of diabetes and obesity. Beyond that, yo-yo dieting has shown a connection to depression and leads to self-defeating behaviors such as emotional and/or binge eating, reverting to poor nutritional patterns of eating, and an inactive lifestyle, to name a few. All of which leads to gaining weight again.
Instead, individuals must find a lifestyle of eating that works for them. Each person has specific things they like. My hope for you in this lesson is to help you find a diet to work with me during our time and a lifestyle pattern of eating you will enjoy far beyond our time together.
Dieting vs. lifestyle of eating
To be successful, you will want to
- know how to cook “healthy” foods in a variety of ways
- find a variety of spice combinations you enjoy
- find delicious zero-to-low calorie marinades or sauces to add with your proteins
- know how many calories to continue your weight loss journey or maintain your current weight
- learn how to calculate how many calories you need to eat per meal
You need to find healthy foods that you are passionate about eating. Eating healthy within your calorie range consistently and keeping up your physical activity is how you will reach your weight loss goal and then maintain it.
As you can tell, this journey never stops. It is a lifestyle. You must focus on eating nutritious (nutrient-dense) food as you live a healthy lifestyle.
*Side note: You must maintain a caloric intake that aligns with your goals.
Two of the most valuable things I’ve learned
Two of the most valuable things I have found over the past ten years of caring about my nutrition are finding something that works and seeing how my body will react to it over time. I will switch it up if it doesn’t taste good or I don’t get the desired results. I must find foods I like and do not mind eating regularly. I want to ensure that my body gets the proper fuel and nutrients when I eat strictly. It is key to understand what works for your body, budget, and schedule and stick to it.
Your assignment
This lesson aims for you to research to see what “diet” may work for you. I say “diet” and use it in the search I am providing once clicked. I do this because the term “diet” is how people refer to it easiest and how a person would think to search for it. I have found my eating pattern more focused on what keeps a healthy and sustainable lifestyle than a short-term plan for eating healthy. However, if you are trying to hit nutrition and fitness goals, you must figure out what diet you’ll enjoy.
Doing this research and the research in the next lesson will benefit you far beyond this course and possible the rest of your life.
Grab a writing utensil and paper (or for those tech-savvy people, open up a word or Google docs document) to use while doing this research. Use the paper to write down different types of food you can eat within the diets you are considering consuming. In the following few lessons, I will have your research what warnings come with diets and their food benefits. Ultimately, I want you to walk away with an extensive education on what diets are safe, appealing to you, and why.
